{"id":518,"date":"2012-12-09T17:27:24","date_gmt":"2012-12-09T21:27:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.willyurman.com\/teaching\/?page_id=518"},"modified":"2020-08-22T13:59:29","modified_gmt":"2020-08-22T17:59:29","slug":"269-the-viewfinder","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.willyurman.com\/teaching\/comm-269\/269-assignments\/269-the-viewfinder\/","title":{"rendered":"269 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c The Viewfinder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-size: 10px; color: #7f807f; text-align: right;\">30 points<\/p>\n<p>Assigned: \u00c2\u00a0Tuesday, August 25, 2020<\/p>\n<p>Due: Sunday, August 30, 2020,<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> \u00c2\u00a0<strong>by 10 pm<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Through The Viewfinder<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Goal:<\/strong> To begin to think like a photographer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Photographs are defined by what we include and exclude in our images &#8211; <strong>the frame.<\/strong> It is the most important decision you&#8217;ll make as a visual journalist.<\/p>\n<p>In Class, I&#8217;ll provide you with a very fancy cardboard viewfinder.<br \/>\nIf you&#8217;re taking the class remotely follow these simple instructions:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The exact size isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t important. You can use any cardboard you have available\u00e2\u20ac\u201dan old box, matte board, etc.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Cut a rectangle out of a piece of cardboard roughly with these dimensions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>The cardboard should be about 5&#215;7 inches.<\/li>\n<li>The cutout in the center should be roughly 1.5&#215;2 inches.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"center\">\n<figure class=\"image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/courses.worldcampus.psu.edu\/canvas\/fa20\/22081--29283\/content\/01_lesson\/images\/Viewfinder_Image.PNG\" alt=\"Viewfinder template\" width=\"303\" height=\"175\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Assignment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>carry the cardboard viewfinder with you over the next few days. Every time you walk into a new room, a new place, look through the viewfinder.<\/li>\n<li>Pay attention to how the viewfinder changes your view.<\/li>\n<li>Try to imagine how a photograph would look as you move and compose the frame.<\/li>\n<li>&#8216;Compose&#8217; photographs that seem visually interesting to you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Write several paragraphs, describing the experience &#8211; what it felt like (besides embarrassing) looking through the viewfinder.\n<ul>\n<li>How did it change the experience of looking for you?
