{"id":194,"date":"2011-08-02T16:06:56","date_gmt":"2011-08-02T20:06:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.willyurman.com\/teaching\/?page_id=194"},"modified":"2014-03-18T00:06:48","modified_gmt":"2014-03-18T04:06:48","slug":"12-soundscape-video","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.willyurman.com\/teaching\/comm-481\/481-assignments\/12-soundscape-video\/","title":{"rendered":"Assignment 14 &#8211; 481 &#8211;  Video Making Widgets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\" align=\"center\">100 points<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><strong>Assigned<\/strong>: Tuesday \u00c2\u00a0February 25, 2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Due:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tuesday, March 18 \u00c2\u00a0Edit in class<\/li>\n<li>Thursday, March 20 Critique rough cut (one letter grade deduction for not having a rough cut to show)<\/li>\n<li>Thursday March 27 &#8211; Final video due at <strong>start<\/strong> of class<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Create your first video \u00e2\u20ac\u201c (45 seconds long)<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">I&#8217;m interested in getting you comfortable with the cameras and recorders and making you \u00c2\u00a0think about the relationship between the audio and the images.<\/p>\n<p>Interview plus visuals =story<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>The widget maker interview<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Time to take what you have learned so far about sequencing and shot selection and\u00c2\u00a0produce a short video story about someone that does something interesting. It could\u00c2\u00a0be an artist, or someone that has an interesting job.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Just make sure to choose someone that does something visual.<\/p>\n<p>There are three components to this assignment.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u00c2\u00a0Shoot a formal interview with your subject.<\/li>\n<li>Shoot enough b&#8221;roll video that relates to what the subject talked about to\u00c2\u00a0cover your a&#8221;roll\u00c2\u00a0 (interview) edits<\/li>\n<li>Edit your video into an interesting narrative.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li>You must include sequences in your B-roll<\/li>\n<li>You must include at least one &#8216;matched action&#8217;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How to:<\/p>\n<p>Planning is key. Schedule with your subject.<\/p>\n<p><strong>INTERVIEW<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Make sure you do your interview in a quiet room, Use side window light and get the mic as close as possible.<\/li>\n<li>Use a tripod for the camera.<\/li>\n<li>Check the\u00c2\u00a0audio levels before the start of the interview.<\/li>\n<li>White balance.<\/li>\n<li>Do a basic interview of\u00c2\u00a010-30 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>Be prepared with questions to ask, but also ask stuff\u00c2\u00a0that comes with the flow of your conversation.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure you ask the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Why do you\u00c2\u00a0do what you do\u00e2\u20ac\u009d question.<\/li>\n<li>Listen for b&#8221;roll ideas and write them down if possible.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>VISUALS<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Shoot video of subject doing what they do.<\/li>\n<li>Try and be creative.<\/li>\n<li>Remember to shoot\u00c2\u00a0lots of wide, medium, tight, tight, tight shots. Action reaction.<\/li>\n<li>Look for moments and\u00c2\u00a0for natural sounds opportunities.<\/li>\n<li>Shoot twice as much b&#8221;roll than you think you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll\u00c2\u00a0need. Try and shoot things the subject talked about.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Goals:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">1. <strong>Strong audio<\/strong> &#8211; both technically and content &#8211; make it interesting. Don&#8217;t forget natural sound!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">2. <strong>visuals<\/strong> &#8211; a variety of shots &#8211; wide medium and tight and super tight that help tell the story, give a sense of place and keep us engaged.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">3. <strong>editing<\/strong> &#8211; a smooth natural edit of both audio and visuals with natural transitions, rhythm and no jump cuts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">4.<strong> interest<\/strong> &#8211; <span style=\"color: #800000; background-color: #c0c0c0;\">MAKE IT INTERESTING, NOT JUST AN EXERCISE, OR &#8216;HOW-TO&#8217;. NO ONE WILL CARE UNLESS IT&#8217;S INTERESTING<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><strong>Name<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0your project folder:<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">DATE_First_Last_WIDGET_video<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Remember to export:<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">1.
