Creating an Augmented Reality App using HP Reveal
Using HP Reveal, each of you will develop a simple AR app for iPhone.
The goal is to create an experience for the user, so as they point their phone at an element in the real world, up pops augmented content – a video, image, etc.
Our Harry Potter Newspaper
Find a newspaper or magazine or book (old fashion print) with a big image on it. This will be the trigger that we will animate.
Then find a short video or audio clip that reveals something about that photo – background information, or something else relevant.
NOTE: The video can’t be larger than 100MB
- Use the HP Reveal desktop website (don’t create your app on the phone)

- Create your app by uploading a photo of the ‘trigger image’ and the video for the ‘overlay’
That’s it. Here are some of the details:
- You must be logged in with our login so we can all easily see the app
- HP Reveal calls their AR apps “Auras” – just go with it
- Take a photo of the photo in the paper using your phone – make sure it’s done in good light and the image is sharp and clear
- As noted, the video or audio ‘overlay’ can’t be larger than 100MB – so it will need to be short, and of lower resolution. You have a couple of options for this step. On a Mac, Quicktime can A. record a screen and B. trim a video to shorten it. You may need to do this a few times to get it under 100MB
QUICKTIME
Open the app
File>Screen Recording to record what’s on the screen
Click the small arrow and select the computer audio to also record audio
When you’re done recording you can edit the video in Quicktime
Edit>Trim
Then Export
File>Export As>720p (this will be a smaller file than 1080 but still good enough
Use that file to upload to HP Reveal as your ‘Overlay’
