How can we use Depth of field in different and creative ways? What are the technical settings, and what are the aesthetic decisions we need to make

Goal: To look for images that use both shallow and deep depth of field

Assignment:

Two parts to this assignment.

Part 1

You may use a friend(s). Photograph two posed portraits of the same person, or different people.

Create two interesting photos of them. One should use shallow depth of field, the other deep depth of field. For each the goal is to make a well-composed, appealing photo. So think about the background and light and location. Don’t photograph them twice in the same place. Think about a way to use DOF creatively in different situations. That will mean picking different backgrounds.

Part 2

Go out into the world and look for unposed photos

Again, two different situations. One that uses shallow and the other deep depth of field.  Your photos MUST have people in them. For this assignment you don’t need to worry about names or captions. Don’t get used to this. You are looking for candid photos that use depth of field in a creative way.

As with all weekly assignments:

  • a minimum of 75 images
  • a minimum of 90 minutes of shooting

For Class

Turn in your work, including 4(4) toned images along with your Raws and Edits to Box. You’ll have two photos from part 1, and two from part 2 in your Toned folder.
