Goal: To think about how images work together to tell the story. A warm-up for your photo story
Look to show us what the place is like, what goes on there. Â A photo story combines images in a way so that each image tells us something new and adds something to the story.
That can happen in many ways – capturing different important moments, or the chronology of a story. Images can introduce us to different characters or elements, or capture specific elements of a story.
One way to think about it is to capture images that show us different perspectives: Â In video we talk about ‘wide, medium, tight’.
IF place is important to your story – then part of your goal is to give us a sense of that place and how your characters fit into that space.
Photograph both the place and the people. Look for a strong variety of photographs that will tell us both what the place looks like and who is there. Think in terms of:
REMEMBER THAT FACTS AREN’T ENOUGH. PHOTOS COMMUNICATE VISUALLY – THEY NEED TO BE INTERESTING
- Place
- These images help establish the place — they may or may not include some faces.
- Face
- Now, find faces to show who works, plays and exists in this space.
- A Place with Faces
- These images should aim to fill the place with faces, so the viewer can see how people move and interact with the place.
- Faces in a Place
- Finally, show faces in the place, demonstrating how they reflect where they are.
