497 – Brainstorm

30pts

Assigned: Monday, January 9, 2017

Due:
Monday, January 23, 2017

 1. What kinds of stories interest you? What ideas do you have for a project for you or someone else in class?

To start, let’s spend a little time next class brainstorming ideas. No bad ideas – just start building a list of possibilities.

Do some research. What kinds of issues center on race, diversity, African-American issues on campus or in the community? What topics are worthy of stories?  What kinds of stories can we look for in our community.

Don’t worry, yet, about finding specific characters, or logistics. We’ll just brainstorm.

DO think about the kinds of stories that work best in different medium – what works in text might not work in video for example.

Bring your ideas to class.

2. Find a great (non-fiction)story online about race and send me the link. It can be a beautifully written piece, a photo essay, video, audio, podcast, interactive.  I want you to think about how stories are told.
Send me the link. We’ll look at some of them in class. Be prepared to tell us what you think and what you know about the story.
