Multimedia means, well, many things. It can be audio and pictures, video, interactive charts, and on and on. That’s what makes it ‘multi’. We will spend most of this semester telling narrative stories – characters who do and say things – using audio and images.

BUT, it is important to understand that there are many ways to tell stories, and you need to use the best tools available for your particular content.

Goal: To think about how to use information in different ways to tell stories.

Assignment:

Each of you will build a timeline. We will be using the free online tool TimelineJS created by Knight Labs. It is one of many many ever-changing tools available to create online interactive content.(In fact, this is their new beta version of the software)

What is important is NOT learning TimelineJS. Tools change, new and better ones come along every day. It is IMPORTANT to learn that you can learn these tools. That you can teach yourself, figure it out, solve problems and become a better journalist/storyteller because of it.

TOPIC

Connect to the big three issues of the fall: The Pandemic, The Protests over policing and race, or The Presidential Election. You can look back at history or cover current events. Remember this is journalism – it’s about facts, and attributing your sources.

Step 1:

Gather your content. Content can include:

  • Your written text
  • Quotes
  • Tweets
  • Images
  • Sounds
  • Video

You need a MINIMUM of 15 elements for this assignment.  And you MUST use at LEAST three different types from at least three different sources.
(You can’t just write the whole timeline for example or get all your information from one site)

For next Tuesday, bring your content.

The first lesson of multimedia is that it starts just like old-fashion reporting with the research and content gathering. You can’t make cool things without the content.

WHAT IS DUE
Your final Timeline will be due Tuesday night at 10 pm
