481 – Sight and Sound

50 points

Assigned: Tuesday, September 26, 2017

Due:
Thursday, October 5, 2017 - bring files to class to edit
Monday, October 9, 2017, turn in project by 11:59 pm

More camera practice. Think about how visuals and sound work together

Assignment:  Record (in video not stills) a scene or place, an event or environment – thinking about both how it looks and how it sounds.

You’ll need to use both a microphone and tripod for this assignment. The MKE400 microphone sits on the camera, so good sound means getting close to the sound. A lav microphone, wired or wireless, would give you more options.

WEAR HEADPHONES

Create a visual and audio montage of a place. Look for visual variety – wide, medium, tight shots as well as different angles, moments, sequences.

Gather sound – what helps give us a sense of the place or environment?

Goals:

  • Get comfortable with the camera
    • white balance
    • focus
    • exposure
  • Get comfortable using a tripod
  • Think about sound and how to use natural sound to tell a story.

Create up to a 60 second, tightly edited, interesting montage. It can be shorter, but NOT longer.

Here are some examples from a project from my old newspaper to give you an idea and inspire you:

Remember for all video projects to submit four (4) files, all with the same name:

YourName_ProjectName.mov (high res version of your final video)
YourName_ProjectName.mp4 (commedia version of your final video)
YourName_ProjectName.doc (your text story to accompany your video)
YourName_ProjectName.jpg (best screen shot or image from your video)

Grading:

  1. Did you get a variety of shots?
  2. Are the visuals technically well-done – properly exposed, in focus, proper white balance
  3. Is the audio technically strong and well done?
  4. Is it interesting?
  5. Does it have a good flow and rhythm in the editing?
  6. Is the text accurate and does it add to the storytelling?
