481 – Camera Skills

50 points

Assigned: Monday, September 21, 2020

Due: Wednesday, September 30, 2020,   Bring files to class
Upload finished project by Sunday, October 4, by 10 pm

I’m interested in getting you comfortable with the cameras.

Assignment:  Video record someone doing something – using a variety of shots and angles.

For this exercise, you may use someone you know. You may NOT pose or stage what they are doing. Try to find something active or interesting. Photograph them, no interviews. Think about it like a silent film. Try to tell a story with just your images.

No cooking videos!!

There must be action – sitting on a couch playing video games or looking at their phone won’t do

You need a minimum of 25 DIFFERENT shots – mixing in wide, medium and tight, along with different angles and points of view.  You should consider getting details, cutaways, anything that looks visually interesting and fits in with the ‘story’.

NOTE: Your final piece probably won’t use all of your shots.  I want to look in your project and see at least 25 different shots. But the final piece should use what looks best – whatever that number might be.

Goals:

  • Get comfortable with the camera
    • white balance
    • focus
    • exposure
  • Get comfortable using a tripod
  • Think about shot selection and how to get variety in your shots.

Bring your files to class. We will use them to practice with Adobe Premiere

We’ll use music as the soundtrack for this assignment. Something to give the piece rhythm and help you practice editing sound and images together.
