Assignment – Man on the Street

50 points

Assigned: Tuesday, February 26, 2019

Due:

  • Tuesday, March 12 – Meet at HUB – we’ll meet inside the main doors, in the lobby area. But dress to go outside.
  • Wednesday, March 20th, turn in the project by 11:59 pm

BRING:

    • D7200 with card and charged battery
    • Wireless mic from Media Tech or Lubert BATTERIES!!
    • Video tripod (the ones from the Comm equipment rooms are best)
    • Headphones

Goal:

We will be practicing with the D7200, learning to compose focus and gather good audio.

Your assignment is to go on campus and interview 10 subjects, asking them the same question.

1. Make sure you have a card in the camera and the battery is charged.

2. Use the microphone you bring – available at Media Tech or Lubert

3. Look for a quiet place, away from noise, out of the wind if you’re outside. Wear headphones!

4. Frame your shot first. Do not put the subject in the center of the frame. Instead, have them looking in from the left or right side of the frame. Make sure you are color balanced and in focus!!!

5. Watch your backgrounds for distractions such as pole or tree limb growing out of your talking head. Also, be aware of unwanted noise such as traffic behind your subject. Turn your subject away from the noise.

Look for soft light and avoid harsh shadows.
You need your subject’s name (spelling) and age
Ask your question(s). If your subject has no solid opinion or nothing interesting to say, then move on to someone else.

THE QUESTION

TBA
(You don’t have to ask it exactly like this, use your own words to get to the point, so it sounds natural from you)

You’re looking for interesting answers, not the obvious. That means asking follow up questions, or moving on to someone else if your subject has nothing to say. You don’t need long interviews with each person, but your job is to interview them. That means drawing them out, making sure you get a good usable piece of audio.

  • You’re looking for at least 10 interesting and compelling answers
  • REMEMBER: We will only use the voice of our subjects, so at least some of the people need to talk in full thoughts.
  • Before or after the question, get them to say and spell their full name on tape

You will be graded on:

  • Did you have at least ten solid interviews?
  • Did you place your (in focus) subject left and right in the frame?
  • Were your audio levels strong enough?
  • Was the audio clear?
  • Did your subjects say something interesting, in a coherent manner?
  • Were the interviews visually well composed and lit
  • Did you edit these together in a way that was interesting and compelling
  • Create a project folder: YourName_ManOnTheStreet

Use the video interview clips to create a video that is no more than 30 seconds long. (You don’t need to use all 10 interviews, just the best ones)

Think about pacing and rhythm

  • You may use any clips you want.
  • You don’t have to use all of them.
  • You need a title slide and credits

The goal is to create a fast-paced interesting video that makes sense has a nice sense of rhythm and pacing.

When you’re done:

Export your video – use the Vimeo 1080 preset (I don’t need text or a jpeg for this assignment), name it properly, and upload to Box

Drop your entire project folder, all assets, organized, with your finished video.
