Assignment 13 – 481 – Behind the Scenes

pass/fail – 50 points

Assigned: Thursday September 18, 2014

Due:

  • Tuesday, September 30 bring audio and images to class (no content, lose 25 points)
  • Tuesday, October 14  Final Project due on server before class

Goal: Create your first audio slideshow – combining sounds with still images

I’m interested in getting you comfortable with the cameras and recorders and making you  think about the relationship between the audio and the images.

Visitors to Penn State get ice cream, look at Old Main, admire Beaver Stadium and sit on the lion.  But what makes Penn State the place that it is – beyond the obvious? What are the special places, who are the special people? Are there classes that every student talks about? Special faculty? What would a casual visitor to Penn State NOT see because they didn’t know where to look?

Find a story that captures something about our campus – it could be an unusual person, a great teacher, the man or woman who takes out the garbage or serves food in the cafeterias. It could be an unusual class, or club, an event, a place where people like to go….use your imagination. Have fun.

The finished show should have:

Audio – Interview(s) and natural sound. At least one interview. Your finished piece must be 60 seconds or less

10-30 images(at least) -these should connect to the audio, advance the story and be visually interesting. Avoid repetition, think about long, medium and tight shots. Think about details, scene setters, moments. Think like a movie producer.

Remember to get names – correct spelling of anyone you interview, get the proper name of where you are, or the class or location.
