Assigned: Thursday, October 3, 2019

Due: Monday, October 14, 2019, by 11:59 pm

Gather audio for your second audio story!

Goals:

  • To produce a short(45 second) audio narrative using at least two kinds of sound
  • Practice using your audio recorder
  • Practice interview techniques

1. Find your story – an interesting person or event. Think sonically – are there good natural sounds? No roommates, friends or relatives allowed.  Look for both a good character – someone who is compelling and can speak well – AND an interesting sound. NO MUSIC OR MUSICIANS

**You NEED an ACTIVE situation – someone who is actually doing something to create the sound – but who can also take a break for the interview**

2. Conduct an interview(s) and record the sound separately.

  • Remember to look for a quiet place for the interview. Get the mic close. Ask good, open-ended questions.
  • Record clean audio of the sound(s) as well.
  • Wear headphones!
  • Your interview should again be at least 10 minutes long, longer is great.

3. Get at least two different photos – at least one should be an unposed action shot of them doing what they do.

4. Write an interesting text introduction that will get our attention – tell us something that isn’t in the audio.

You should have at least two files – an interview and a separate recording of the sound in your raw audio.

TURN IN: (Uploaded to Box)
Your entire project folder, raw audio, final audio, photos, etc.

Name your file:  YourFirstName_YourLastName__SOUND_SubjectName.mp3
Name your text file the exact same thing and save as a .doc or .txt file

Your final piece can be 45 seconds long or less! BUT NO LONGER!!

POST:
the finished audio, images and text to one WordPress Post

Remember, you must also write and turn in a short text document with your piece. This should be a few sentences or short paragraph or two that compliments your piece. It should NOT be an explanation of your multimedia piece, but rather a journalistic story that accompanies your multimedia piece.

For example:

GOOD

(For a video on how the couple met – it adds facts that aren’t in the video and gives us additional background)
After graduating from Penn State, Jim and Janet Meister moved from city to city, following Jim’s job with Alcoa. They settled in Philadelphia just long enough to raise their two daughters. When Jim finally retired (for his 4th time), they picked up their life and moved back to their roots –Happy Valley.

The Meister’s have been happily living in State College for 17 years. Not only does Jim host the infamous Meister tailgate every game day, but he is an extremely important character in the PSU community – endowing multiple scholarships, heading the marketing of Beaver Stadium box seating, and last but not least winning the prestigious Lion Paw’s Medal alongside Joe Paterno.

BAD

Don’t say, “this is a video about…” or, “For my video I…”. Write it like a short piece of journalism.

Grading:

  1. Is the audio technically strong – both the interview and natural sound
  2. Is the editing smooth and natural and invisible
  3. Is the story interesting!!!! Does it make sense
  4. Is the natural sound effective and storytelling – does it add something to the story
  5. Did you spend enough time interviewing your subject to allow you to ask good questions and dig deep into the story
